I have been working since some time (almost 3 years) and at times, I don’t feel anything great even after seeing my salary credited into my account every month end. Weekdays and weekends make no difference. But, I feel extremely happy at times when I had to stretch than my routine to complete my work.
Why am I telling you this? Today, I found out about discovering the greatness in our work which gave me a lot of happiness than usual and now I am happier than before. So, this is our topic of discussion today.
Discovering greatness in our work
We are great in our own way, but we fail to acknowledge it and that makes us unhappy.
Today, I was reading a book and I have the habit of sharing about anything interesting which I come across in the book with you and my sister as well, you share something with me through comments and my sister does it as well through sharing anything interesting from what she has read. And, she started reading the Greatness Guide by Robin Sharma and in that he has mentioned the story about a happy Taxi Driver.
I am No Driver, I help people reaching their destination
I have not read the story, but through my sister, I heard that Robin Sharma came in touch with a very happy taxi driver and on asking for the reason behind his happiness he replied that I am happy because I help people reach their destination and that too on time.
I guess, he had all the necessary reasons to curse his stars for being just a taxi driver, but he wasn’t really doing that. He had discovered the greatness in his work. After discovering greatness in his work it made happy which could impress Robin Sharma itself.
My greatness discovery
A person’s greatness is decided not based on What he does? But, it is based on How he does?
I gave a small thought the above story which I generally do after hearing about great and happy souls. Then, I started digging into my profession for discovering greatness in it, I am a software engineer by profession and I haven’t really found happiness. So, I discovered I am helping my clients through creating a software to make their lives easier, I didn’t even see the faces of those happy clients who are using the product (which we have created) and after discovering this it gave me a lot of happiness.
The happiness which I couldn’t discover till now (as I mentioned in the beginning of this post) appeared before him. So, we all are great in our own way, but we have been unconsciously influenced that we aren’t great. Everything that we do for others makes us both happy and great as well.
Why discover greatness?
Most of us feel sad because we don’t see anything great about our work and as a result, we consider it doesn’t make any significant difference to the world (I was thinking the same way). But, consider the happy taxi driver who is in direct interaction with the world and when he saw how happy people were with his work he actually forgot that he is just a taxi driver and he felt like a hero who helps people and makes them happy.
Did you notice, the moment he felt like a hero it made him feel Great. And, the moment I discovered the greatness in my work I too felt happy. The Ultimate goal of human life is to be happy says the immortal Aristotle and if discovering greatness in our work makes us happy then why not discover it? Now, what I want you to do is discover the greatness in your work and I bet it would make you happy and share it with me through comments or mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org because it makes both you and me happy.
How discover greatness?
If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets as Michelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ” Here lived a great street sweeper who did his Job well.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Discovering greatness is simple, let’s follow the taxi driver’s formula – He just thought about how his work would help others and that made him treat his profession more seriously as a medium to be useful to others. So, now think about the people who are happy with you and your work, your customers, family, colleagues, friends.
Once you get the feel that others are happy with you and your work then you feel instantly happy and great as well. Don’t forget to share your greatness with me, I love hearing about the greatness of you because it inspires me.
Thanks for reading. Remember, you are great and born to be great, if someone says you aren’t great then he either doesn’t know about your greatness or doesn’t know the actual meaning of greatness (Greatness – Doing something at an above average level).
Bye… Take care…
